Inter Defender Lucio: Playing Against Bayern Will Be Special

Lucio has stated that Inter’s Champions League final encounter against Bayern Munich will be special, not because he used to play for Bayern but because of the magnitude of the occasion.

The Brazilian centre-back has been one of the stars of the Champions League over the course of this season and will be expected to shine at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday evening. It is an encounter he is keenly looking forward to.

“It's special because it is the final act,” he told Kicker. “Every player in the world has a dream to win this trophy. With ‘Schweini’
[Bastian Schweinsteiger] I have exchanged a few texts, but alongside that, I’ve not had any contact with Bayern.”

Lucio departed the Bundesliga club last summer but is settling in well at the Nerazzurri.

“I am very happy at Inter and Italy in general,” the 32-year-old World Cup winner continued. “So far, it has been a fantastic year in which we’ve won the cup and the [Serie A] championship. Even in the Champions League, we have delivered excellent work, eliminating Chelsea and Barcelona, which is anything but simple.”

Having negotiated these incredibly awkward encounters, Inter will feel confident that they are in a healthy state to become European champions for the first time in almost 50 years.

Andreas Brehme Hopeful Of A Bayern Win

Saturday's Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Inter will be quite a special game for former Germany international Andreas Brehme. The defender enjoyed successful spells at both the clubs but is hopeful the German side will lift the trophy at the weekend.

"It's a special match for me personally. I had my best spell as a player with Inter, but I’m supporting Bayern. As I’m German, my loyalties are 51 percent Bayern and 49 percent Inter," Brehme said on the FIFA website.

"My time at Inter was terrific. Italian football was head and shoulders above the rest in Europe at the time, and I was proud to be playing there. The stadiums were always packed, every game was a sell-out and the atmosphere was unique.

"It was a magnificent time. I’d happily do it all over again. The supporters and the media were very good to us. Their backing was tremendous, especially in the first season when we won the league."

Jose Mourinho Has Told Us To Play Defensively in Champions League final

Inter defender Lucio is expecting a Champions League final of all sorts, but one thing is for sure - Jose Mourinho wants defensive football.

"Mourinho wants us to play defensively and to be fully concentrated throughout the game. It has worked brilliantly against Chelsea and Barcelona. If each player in the side plays well, we will win," he told the Bundesliga's official website.

Lucio made the switch from Bayern to Inter last summer and now he crosses paths with them once again. However, he is not bothered about treading on their toes.

"In such a final everything can happen. Bayern are a great team and they have done brilliantly to get to the final," he added.

"Van Gaal has done a great job, and has brought through some great new players. Robben and Olic are on great form. We need to be aware that the whole team is on such great form."

The Key Personal Battles For Bayern Munich - Inter

Olic will never convince the purists who prefer their strikers to be calm, assured and elegant but his lack of technique does not reduce his impact. It is a cliche to still describe the Croatian as 'tireless'; however, he allows the opposition defence no time to rest. At Bayern he has added an added goal threat to his game and has often been the man to drag FC Hollywood out of the fire.

In that respect, Lucio must be on his guard. One slip-up or one misplaced pass could precede an Olic chance on goal. Also, the Brazilian's forays upfield could leave gaps that the former CSKA man would only be too happy to exploit. Whereas Lucio has successfully bullied the likes of Ibrahimovic and Drogba this season, he will face a completely different threat in the shape of Olic.

Master versus apprentice. The two worked together a decade ago at Barcelona but have since parted. As Van Gaal had to endure a spectacular fall from grace while in charge of the Dutch national team, the Special One's star rose and rose. The Dutchman has since rebuilt his reputation and led AZ and Bayern to successive titles while Mourinho has continued to stack up the honors. The veteran coach is probably more adept at making 'in-game' changes but Mourinho, no doubt, has a remedy for his adversary's Big Red Machine. A fascinating tactical battle lies in store.

Semi finals Explained
First Leg: Inter 3-1 Barcelona
It was the Nerazzurri who conceded the first goal of the evening at the San Siro in the 19th minute when Pedro struck. But Inter came roaring back, scoring through Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Diego Milito to win the first leg 3-1. It was a masterclass performance from the Italians, who made Barcelona look ordinary at times.

Second Leg: Barcelona 1-0 Inter
The game turned controversial in the 28th minute when Thiago Motta was sent off for what seemed like a minor foul on Sergio Busquets. After going a man down, Mourinho decided to shut up shop and parked the bus in front of the goal. However, Barcelona scored six minutes from time through a stunning Gerard Pique strike - although the Catalan defender looked suspiciously offside - and made it tantalisingly exciting.

Bojan Krkic scored late on, but his effort was disallowed, although there was suggestion that it was an incorrect decision. Things turned ugly after the final whistle as sparks began to fly all around but Inter were through to the final 3-2 on aggregate.

It Is Hard To Choose Between Bayern Munich And Inter

Inter director Gabriele Oriali has examined Saturday's Champions League final against Bayern Munich and he has said it's too close to predict a winner. "Both teams have the same chances of winning," he told Sky Sport 24.

Oriali gave an account of how Inter reached the final, suggesting that they had the harder route. "We arrived there by playing well, with great play against teams who were tipped to win the Champions League," he added.

"Bayern got to the final with results against prestigious teams, but also due to some questionable decisions from referees like in the game against Fiorentina. "But we know what German teams are like. They are always alive and they fight till the end without giving up so they can win."

Oriali was asked about Jose Mourinho's future following his comments about joining Real Madrid. But the Italian preferred not to reveal much. "We have to stay focussed so we can try to lift this Cup rather than waste energy speaking about people's futures."

Bayern Munich Accept Champions League Final Suspension

Bayern Munich have announced they will accept the decision that confirmed Franck Ribery's suspension for this weekend's Champions League final.

The Bundesliga champions have fought to overturn the three-match ban handed to their French superstar, after the straight red card he picked up in the first leg of the semi-final match with Olympique Lyonnais. He will now sit out the show-piece against Inter Milan.

Bayern had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that the offence should have been classified as dangerous foul play - which would have seen a one-match ban handed out - but this was rejected on Monday, ending the club's hopes of being able to play their talismanic attacker.

"FC Bayern Munich must and will accept and respect the judgement of the CAS," a club statement released on Tuesday said.

"FC Bayern Munich took every legal route possible in the interest of the club, their supporters and, of course, Franck Ribery."Buy champions league tickets and champions league final tickets here !

A comprarison of both the finalist teams

Prior to the 2010 final, Bayern Munich and Internazionale had previously met four times in European competition. In those four matches, Bayern hold the edge with two wins to Internazionale's one; the other match finished as a draw. The first meeting between the two sides took place in the third round of the 1988–89 UEFA Cup; Inter won 2–0 the first match at the Olympiastadion in Munich, but Bayern responded with a 3–1 win at the San Siro two weeks later to go through on the away goals rule. They were next drawn together in Group B of the 2006–07 UEFA Champions League, along with Spartak Moscow and Sporting CP. The first match between Bayern and Inter was played at the San Siro, where Bayern won 2–0; the return match finished as a 1–1 draw.

Both teams go into the final chasing the Treble, an achievement never before reached by teams from their respective countries; Internazionale came closest in 1965, when they won the Serie A and the European Cup but lost 1–0 to Juventus in the Coppa Italia final. Bayern Munich claimed their 22nd Bundesliga title on the last day of the season with a 3–1 win away to Hertha BSC on 8 May 2010,[3] before claiming their eighth domestic Double with a 4–0 win over Werder Bremen in the 2010 DFB-Pokal Final on 15 May. Meanwhile, Internazionale beat Roma 1–0 for their sixth Coppa Italia on 5 May, and then won their fifth Serie A title in a row and their second Double on 16 May with a 1–0 win away to relegated Siena. With both teams having secured domestic Doubles going into the final, it is guaranteed that the Treble will be won for the second year in a row following Barcelona's success in 2008–09.

The Champions League has grown in stature and is now one of the most important football tournaments in the world, watched by billions worldwide.

Although Spanish and English clubs have dominated the competition in recent years, the 2010 Champions League final will be contested by Bayern Munich and Inter Milan - two clubs with a rich pedigree in European club competitions, but less successful than their illustrious rivals from the Premier League and La Liga over the past few seasons.

Both clubs are in line for a treble - winning the league, domestic cup, as well as the Champions League - but only one club can succeed.

Drawing on its wide range of international correspondents and football experts, the dpa will preview and analyse the upcoming Champions League final with a series of features and backgrounders.

Route to the chamions league final: Bayern

Bayern struck first against opponents who had won their previous five UEFA Champions League matches thanks to Arjen Robben's penalty in first-half added time and, after Per Krøldrup had levelled, Miroslav Klose headed an 89th-minute winner to give Bayern a slender advantage for their trip to Florence. It looked as if that would be insufficient as Juan Vargas and Stevan Jovetić scored either side of half-time to edge Fiorentina ahead on aggregate but Mark van Bommel pulled one back on the hour and, though Jovetić swiftly restored the Viola's two-goal cushion, Robben's spectacular 65th-minute goal took Bayern through.

Quarter-finals
FC Bayern München 2-1, 2-3 Manchester United FC (agg: 4-4, Bayern win on away goals)
Bayern made the worst possible start to the repeat of the 1999 final as Wayne Rooney volleyed United into a first-minute lead, and it took a slice of luck to bring them level, Franck Ribéry's free-kick taking a decisive deflection off Rooney in the 77th minute. Although Olić struck an added-time winner, Bayern were on the ropes when United took a 3-0 lead in the first 41 minutes at Old Trafford thanks to Darron Gibson's opener and two from Nani. Olić again pulled one back before the break, and for the second round running Robben was decisive, volleying in Ribéry's left-wing corner in the 74th minute.

Semi-finals
FC Bayern München 1-0, 3-0 Olympique Lyonnais (agg: 4-0)
Ribéry was sent off in the first half but it was ten against ten when Jérémy Toulalan collected two bookings early in the second period. Robben scored the only goal in the 69th minute. Bayern then put in an imperious display at the Stade de Gerland, Olić doubling their aggregate lead in the 26th minute and then adding two more goals in the final quarter to complete his hat-trick and book Bayern's place in an eighth European Champion Clubs' Cup final. Inter through to Champions League final

Inter Milan are through to the final of the European Champions League. They were beaten 1-nil by Barcelona in the Nou Camp, but go through to the final 3-2 on aggregate. It's Inter's first European Cup final since 1972.

Jose Mourinho's Inter came into the game with a 3-1 lead from the first leg, but had to play for over an hour with ten men, after Thiago Motta was sent off for putting his hand into the face of Sergio Busquets.

However, Barca failed to take advantage with their extra man until Gerard Pique's shot set up a frantic finale.

Bojan Zrkic then saw an injury-time strike ruled out, but Inter held on to set up a final against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu in Madrid on May 22nd.

2010 UEFA Champions League Final

The 2010 UEFA Champions League Final is a football match, the final match of the 2009–10 UEFA Champions League, scheduled to be played on Saturday, 22 May 2010. It will be contested by Bayern Munich and Internazionale. It will be the 18th final of the UEFA Champions League under the current format and the 55th in total. The game will be played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid.

In November 2007, it was decided that the 2010 final would be the first Champions League final to be played on a Saturday, rather than the traditional Wednesday.

The winners will play against the winners of the 2010 UEFA Europa League Final in the 2010 UEFA Super Cup, and also enter the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup.

Final blow for banned Ribery

Bayern Munich's call on UEFA to be lenient with Franck Ribery has fallen on deaf ears after the France star was handed a three-game ban which rules him out of the Champions League Final.

The Bundesliga giants booked their place in next month's Madrid showpiece following a 4-0 aggregate semi-final victory over Lyon on Tuesday night.

Ribery missed the second leg which Bayern won 3-0 at the Stade Gerland after being sent off in the first match following a dangerous high tackle on Lisandro Lopez.

Bayern had urged UEFA to show lenience when assessing whether Ribery's automatic one-match ban should be increased.

However, the France winger has now seen his suspension increased to three games, which means he will miss out on the final on May 22 against either Barcelona or Internazionale.

"Franck Ribery will miss the final after the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body today decided to suspend the winger for three UEFA club competition matches for assault," read a statement.

"(He) was banned for last night's second leg in Lyon, which means that the suspension now remains in place for two further games - the UEFA Champions League final in Madrid on 22 May and the following match in any UEFA club competition for which he is eligible.

"Bayern may appeal within three days of communication of the decision."

Inter Milan 3 – 1 Barcelona

Match updates : As the match started, Inter were seeing less of the ball than their opponents, but they were dogged in defence and threatening in the final third and after Milito bent a hugely presentable chance wide, they equalised on the half-hour mark.

As Eto’o crossed from the Inter right, the Barca defenders all got sucked into the middle, including right-back Daniel Alves – and when Milito turned and teed up Sneijder, the Dutchman had the freedom of the park to lash in an equaliser.

Barca, denied space with which to operate, were struggling to find anything like their usual fluency as Inter doubled up on Messi and denied the influential Xavi the time to spray passes around.

Wesley Sneijder levels for Inter
Sneijder keeps his cool to level matters for Inter

Just after the break Goran Pandev failed by inches to latch on to Milito’s ball from the right, but the Italians did not take too much longer to get themselves ahead.

Messi lost the ball in his own half and Inter broke with pace, the ball finding its way to Milito on the right-hand side of the area. The Argentine took his time and picked out the marauding Maicon as the Brazilian took a touch and rammed past Valdes.

Barca, perhaps weary after their 14-hour coach trip to get to Milan, tried to respond, but Messi’s shot and Sergio Busquets’ header were both well saved by Julio Cesar in the Inter goal.

On the hour mark, Mourinho’s men took firm control of the tie. They broke quickly again and after Sneijder had completely misdirected his header from an Eto’o cross from the right, Milito was on hand to nod in from point-blank range.

Having looked comfortable early on, now Barcelona were flustered and even Xavi was misplacing passes, much to the delight of the Nerazzurri faithful.

But Barca recovered their composure to lay siege to the Inter goal in the closing stages and they will wonder how they did not at least narrow the deficit going into next week’s tie.

Messi’s 30-yard free-kick forced Julio Cesar to parry, before Alves was denied what appeared to be a good penalty appeal when he fell under Sneijder’s challenge in the area. To rub salt into the wounds, the Brazilian found himself cautioned for simulation.

As the clock ticked down Gerard Pique – switched from centre-back to a target man role as Barca pressed for a goal – and Pedro were both denied by Julio Cesar as Inter clung on to their formidable advantage ahead of a daunting trip to the Camp Nou.

Harry Redknapp says Tottenham can seal Champions League spot

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is in no doubt that he made the right decision to sign a new long-term contract.

The Spain international has committed his future to the Reds for the next six years, having established himself as a key player in Rafa Benitez's side since moving from in 2005.

And Reina insists he had no concerns about putting pen-to-paper, despite Liverpool's current standing in the Premier League.

Liverpool appear likely to qualify for European competition next season but are struggling to finish fourth.

Reina would therefore have to miss out on the excitement of the UEFA Champions League but he maintains that he is completely satisfied at Anfield.

"I am really happy at Liverpool," he told the club's official website.

Barcelona's Andres Could Start Clash

Just hours away from the opening whistle of Barcelona and Arsenal's potentially epic match-up this evening, Barca coach Pep Guardiola received good news as midfielder Andres Iniesta trained at a normal pace and could well be included in the starting line-up against the Gunners.

As reported by Marca, Iniesta was initially ruled out for 10 days after being injured on the March 27 against Mallorca. The Spanish international appears to have recovered bang on schedule having come through the training session with no ill effects.

Arsenal stand in Barcelona's way

FC Barcelona will continue their defence of the UEFA Champions League title with a quarter-final against the side they beat to win the competition in 2006, Arsenal FC.

For the first time since 1998/99 six nations were represented in the draw, made by UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino and the ambassador for the Madrid final, Emilio Butragueño. While Barcelona meet Arsenal over two legs on 30/31 March and 6/7 April, Olympique Lyonnais play French rivals FC Girondins de Bordeaux, FC Bayern München take on Manchester United FC in a replay of the 1999 Camp Nou final and FC Internazionale Milano meet PFC CSKA Moskva.

In the semi-finals, Barcelona or Arsenal will take on Inter or CSKA while the remaining French representatives face Bayern or United. The final will be played at Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu stadium, the first in its new Saturday slot of 22 May, part of a week-long festival that will also encompass the UEFA Women's Champions League final in Getafe two days earlier.

All 8 clubs are randomly matched; however, starting 2010 season, the clubs from same country cannot face each other in the quarter-finals.

The games are conducted in 2 legs -home and away- where the aggregate goals decides the match winner.

If the aggregate goals cannot produce a winner the away goal rule is used. If still tied the clubs play extra time, where the away goals rule still applies. If still tied after extra time, the game goes to penalties.

The Stamford Bridge pitch

The Stamford Bridge pitch, the freehold, the turnstiles and Chelsea's naming rights are now owned by Chelsea Pitch Owners, a non-profit organisation in which fans are the shareholders. The CPO was created to ensure the stadium could never again be sold to developers. It also means that if the club moves to a new location, they could not use the Chelsea FC name.

The club plans to increase its capacity to over 50,000. Owing to its location in a built-up part of London on a main road and next to two railway lines, fans can only enter the stadium through the Fulham Road entrances, which places severe constraints on expansion due to health and safety regulations.

As a result, Chelsea have been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge to sites including the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, Battersea Power Station and the Chelsea Barracks. However, the club have reiterated their desire to keep Chelsea at their current home.

Chelsea's training ground is located in Cobham, Surrey. Chelsea moved to Cobham in 2004. Their previous training ground in Harlington was taken over by QPR in 2005. The new training facilities in Cobham were completed in 2007.

Club Atlético de Madrid is a Spanish football club based in Madrid who play in the Primera División of La Liga. Their home stadium is the Vicente Calderón Stadium, which currently holds up to 55,000 spectators. The club is one of the most successful in Spanish League history, having won both La Liga and the Copa del Rey on nine occasions, including a double in 1996. They also won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1962 and were European Cup runners-up and Intercontinental Cup winners in 1974.

During their history, the club have been known by a number of nicknames including los colchoneros or the mattresses due to their first team stripes being the same colours as old-fashioned mattresses. During the 1970s they became known as los indios. This was allegedly due to the club signing several South American players after the restrictions on signing foreign players was lifted. However there are a number of counter theories which claim they were so named because their stadium is camped on the river bank or because los indios were the traditional enemy of los blancos - the whites. The latter nickname refers to the club's city rival Real Madrid.

Adidas as Sponcers

Adidas is a secondary sponsor and supplies the official match ball, as they do for all other UEFA competitions. Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer is also a secondary sponsor as the official Champions League video game.

Individual clubs may wear jerseys with advertising, even if such sponsors conflict with those of the Champions League. However, only one sponsorship is permitted per jersey (plus that of the manufacturer), and if clubs play a match in a country where the relevant sponsorship category is restricted (such as the case of France, alcohol, and betting), then they must remove that logo from their jerseys.

Barça progress after early scare

FC Barcelona emerged unscathed from a difficult examination by FC Dynamo Kyiv to claim a comeback victory that took them through to the UEFA Champions League first knockout round as Group F winners.

Messi winner
The holders were on the ropes at a chilly Valeriy Lobanovskiy Stadium when Artem Milevskiy headed Dynamo in front inside two minutes, but they fought back to level through Xavi Hernández just past the half-hour before Lionel Messi's imperious late winner removed all doubt. Victory confirmed top spot for Barcelona ahead of FC Internazionale Milano and denied Dynamo a place in the UEFA Europa League as they finished bottom.

Milevskiy strikes
Josep Guardiola's men had not conceded away from home in this season's UEFA Champions League, but Dynamo struck with the first attack of the match. After Gerard Piqué's foul, Andriy Shevchenko swung in a free-kick from the left and Milevskiy's glancing header at the near post caught Víctor Valdés unawares, the ball squirming from the goalkeeper's grasp and into the net. At this stage Dynamo were provisionally in second place.

Barcelona dominate
However, Olexandr Shovkovskiy was not having a much easier night in the Dynamo goal and his miscued clearance almost handed Messi a 13th-minute equaliser. The goalkeeper, though, quickly recovered and dived to push away the Argentinian's left-footed shot. Barça began to monopolise possession, and by midway through the first-half they had enjoyed 80 per cent of the ball, though they were struggling to create clear opportunities. Messi started to drop deep in an attempt to pull the strings and he had a shot deflected wide after a typically surging run.

Xavi leveller
On 33 minutes, the Blaugrana pressure finally told. Messi sent Eric Abidal away on the left and the full-back's low cross allowed Xavi to guide in from close range. Barça continued to move the ball well and on the cusp of the interval Daniel Alves tested Shovkovskiy with a cross-shot after a flowing move. Dynamo's need to set the pace in the second period meant they were vulnerable to counterattacks and Messi was denied a certain goal by Ognjen Vukojević's alert interception. The home side responded well, and Shevchenko delivered another free-kick that Leandro Almeida headed into the side-netting.

Vociferous crowd
Dynamo, encouraged by a vociferous crowd, tried manfully to shape openings, but struggled against a Barcelona rearguard back to its best after their initial uncertainty. In fact the holders looked more likely to score, with only desperate defensive blocks denying Messi, Alves and Andrés Iniesta in quick succession. Dynamo's last throw of the dice was to bring on Miloš Ninković for the more defensive Gérson Magrão in an attempt to wrest control. With just four minutes of normal time left, though, Barça confirmed their superiority, Messi stepping up to curl a magnificent free-kick past Shovkovskiy and end Dynamo's European campaign.

Alcohol & betting websites sponsorship

Teams may be forced to remove alcohol sponsorship logos from their kits if they travel to a country with sponsorship restrictions.

For example, when Liverpool played away to Lyon, Liverpool was forced to remove Carlsberg from their kits, as France, including state sponsors, restrict such sponsorships. Other cases occurring in Switzerland when Real Madrid played away at Zürich, Real Madrid were forced to remove bwin.com from their kits. Also in Norway and Russia there are similar restrictions.

Media Coverage

The competition attracts a huge television audience, not just in Europe, but throughout the world. The matches are broadcast in over 70 countries in more than 40 languages each year, and some important matches can attract over 200 million TV audience, often considered as one of the most watched sports events on TV.

Also, although pay TV broadcasters always hold the rights to broadcast the majority (if not all) of the matches, it does not mean they will broadcast them all. This is especially the case during the group stage where 8 matches are played on any one night (all matches kick-off at 20.45 CET, with the exception of matches held in Russia). This is due to limitations in a broadcaster’s capacity to be able to broadcast matches, so for example, Sky Sports in the United Kingdom will always broadcast every match for which they have the rights to do so – utilising its ownership of the Sky Digital satellite television service on which it broadcasts, whilst Sport TV in Portugal will broadcast a selection of the matches it has the rights to, but not all, as it has limited broadcasting capacity on the TV Cabo satellite and cable television service.

Foundations of the tournament

The competition began as the 1955–56 using a two-leg knockout format where the teams would play two matches, one at home and one away, and the team with the highest overall score qualifying for the next round of the competition. Until 1992, entry was restricted to the teams that won their national league championships, plus the current European Cup holder. In the 1992–93 season, the format was changed to include a group stage and the tournament was renamed the UEFA Champions League. There have since been numerous changes to eligibility for the competition, the number of qualifying rounds and the group structure. In 1997–98, eligibility was expanded to include the runners-up from some countries according to UEFA's coefficient ranking list. The qualification system has been restructured so that national champions from lower ranked countries have to take part in one or more qualifying rounds before the group stages, while runners-up from higher ranked countries enter in later rounds. Up to four clubs from the top-ranked countries are currently given entry to the competition.

Between 1960 and 2004, the winner of the tournament qualified for the now defunct Intercontinental Cup against the winner of the Copa Libertadores of South America. Since then, the winner automatically qualifies for the FIFA-organised Club World Cup with other winners of continental club championships.

Qualification

As of 2009, the UEFA Champions League commences with a round-robin group stage of 32 teams, which is preceded by two qualification 'streams' for teams that do not receive direct entry to the tournament proper. The two streams are divided between teams qualified by virtue of being league champions, and those qualified by virtue of finishing 2nd-4th in their national championship.

The situation with holders of the Champions League has not always been clearly defined. There was controversy when Liverpool won the competition in 2004–05 but finished outside the top four in the FA Premier League. The Football Association ruled that Everton, who finished fourth in the Premier League, should get the final English place in the 2005–06 European Cup. UEFA came to an agreement that both Merseyside rivals would be allowed to enter the competition with Liverpool starting from the first qualifying round and Everton starting from the third qualifying round. This confusion resulted in the current ruling, whereby if the European Cup winners fail to finish in one of its national league's qualifying positions, it will take the place of the lowest placed team in its association. The superseded team will go to the UEFA Europa League.

In 2005-06, Liverpool and Artmedia Bratislava of Slovakia became the first teams to reach the Champions League group phase after playing in all three qualifying rounds. In 2008-09, both BATE and Anorthosis Famagusta achieved the same feat. Barcelona, Manchester United, and Porto are the teams that have appeared most often in the group stage: fourteen times each. FC Porto have only won the tournament once since the establishment of the group stage (2004), Manchester United (1999 and 2008) and Barcelona (2006 and 2009) have both won it twice.

Between 2003 and 2008, no differentiation was made between champions and non-champions in qualification. The sixteen top ranked teams spread across the biggest domestic leagues qualified directly for the tournament group stage. Prior to this, three preliminary knockout qualifying rounds whittled down the remaining teams, with different teams starting in different rounds.
